Master Program in Computational Sciences

Modern experimental technique generate larger and larger datasets, and simulation and modeling of complex systems has become an important tool in various fields of science. Examples include machine learning and pattern recognition in systems biology, modeling of neural networks in neurosciences, simulation of plasmas in space and astrophysics, and the numerical solution of many-body problems in chemistry or condensed-matter physics. These developments generate a need for specialized study programs.

The planned Master program in Computational Sciences will directly incorporate research activities of CA3 into teaching. Within this interdisciplinary, research-oriented Master program, students from different scientific backgrounds will obtain the skillset required for modern, computational research methods in numerous scientific fields. Students will be trained both in simulation science and their selected area of specialization.

The Master program will complement other planned study programs in the field of data and simulation sciences and connect to the newly founded Center for Data and Simulation Science.

The program will offer specializiations from the various departments of the University of Cologne's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Available options include:

Curriculum

The Master Computational Sciences is designed as a two-year program. During the first year, students will mainly study general simulation science; the second year will consist primarily of project work (including the Master thesis) and specialized modules.
